Teaching Engineering and Applied Science Skills to Local Students of All Ages

"The Community Service Learning Program represents the meeting of the power and potential.  The students have harnessed the resources of Columbia University and the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance for the benefit of children who are pushing past limitations to realize their potential."
 - Carla McIntosh, President, Marcus Garvey Park Alliance

Columbia's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) sponsors community service learning that connects Columbia students and faculty with schools and workforce training programs to spread skills essential in today's economy.

School-based projects help teachers at six uptown new York City public schools expand their knowledge of math and science and create lessons with technologies that promote higher student achievement.  In-school and after-school programs engage K-12 students in the excitement of research and discovery.

Community service learning brings SEAS students, participants in the Summer Program for High School Students, and local nonprofit agencies together to solve technological challenges in deliverign social services in areas such as HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and urban planning.

Workforce development programs train New Yorkers in career-enhancing skills in technology, communication, project management, and teamwork.  Participants apply tthe skills in project teams with COlumbia faculty, students, and alumni, and are able to transfer them to new job opportunities.
