The Stringers ProgramCombining Journalism and EntertainmentColumbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) and Camp Broadway joined forces to create the Stringers Program—a comprehensive program aimed at training New York City high school journalists to report on entertainment events. The Stringers Program is designed to foster an interest in both journalism and theatre among New York City high school students. Each fall and spring semester, CSPA chooses 30 students to participate in the program. These students attend workshops to learn interviewing and reporting techniques and then have an opportunity to apply their new skills in the field. While CSPA provides the classroom instruction, Camp Broadway arranges contacts for a different Broadway production each year. Students are given assignments to interview the cast, crew, and producers of a production group, enabling the students to apply what they have learned. Past assignments have included interviews with the cast and crews of Rent, Aida, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. CSPA publishes the students' articles and posts them on CSPA's adjunct Web site at www.studentpressreview.com. For more information about the Stringers Program and how to apply, please contact the CSPA—phone: 212-854-9400; e-mail: cspa@columbia.edu; or visit their Web site at http://cspa.columbia.edu/. |
