Removing Barriers to Higher Education
"DDC is a place where you are always welcome and help is waiting. Being a sophomore representative on the DDC Student Council also enabled me to become a leader at my own school, where I was a debate captain."
- Bruke Abenet, DDC Upward Bound '03
Every Year, more than 1,000 local students take part in Columbia's Double Discovery Center (DDC) programs that help students graduate from high school, gain admission to college, and earn college degrees.
DDC's Talent Search program provides academic support and career counseling to students in grades 7 through 12, preparing them for high-school entrance, high-school graduation, and college enrollment. Upward Bound engages high-school studens in an intensive, year-round program that helps them prepare for college. DDC programs help students learn about colleges and careers, improve their academic work, gain confidence, and achieve their dreams through a life of learning and education.
"DDC has been the biggest support system I have," recalls Diana Smithens, who completed Upward Bound in 2003. "The programs has also opened me to experiences I never thought I would have...and the actual location at Columbia has taught me more than any college counselor could tell me."
Parents and students interested in the programs offered by Double Discovery Center should visit their Web site at www.doublediscovery.org to learn more about the programs, qualifications, and application deadlines.
