Project Overview

Knox Hall

Knox Hall, located on the campus of Union Theological Seminary, is currently being renovated to be the new home of Columbia University's Departments of Sociology, MEALAC, Middle East Institute, South Asia Institute and the Africa Institute.  Construction began in the winter of 2008 and is scheduled to be completed for occupancy by the fall of 2009. The project includes four (4) geothermal wells as part of an overall sustainable design effort.

Sustainable elements of the project include building re-use; community connectivity; reduction of lighting pollution and heat island effects; water use reduction; double glazed replacement windows; high efficiency geothermal HVAC, equipment and controls; use of re-used, re-cycled, regional and renewable materials; and measures to maximize indoor environmental quality.

Knox Hall is registered under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
