Project Overview

Butler Library

Butler Library, Columbia University's flagship library, is undergoing a $115 million multiphase renovation project. These renovations include elevator rehabilitation, new finishes and updated mechanical and electrical systems in addition to new communications and fire-safety systems.

Reading rooms and study areas are being redesigned for a more appealing and efficient configuration, suitable for both individual and group study. In addition, they will be equipped with the infrastructure needed for today's communication technologies.

Construction on the fifth and final phase of the renovation began in the summer of 2005. The stack 14 rare book collection area will be improved with new lighting, fire-protection and detection systems, and a refurbishment of finishes. Level 700, 800 and 900 graduate carrels will undergo a complete renovation with new finishes and upgraded electrical and data systems. As part of the final phase, improvements of HVAC and roofing systems will be completed in late 2007.
